Do You Have A Relationship Action Plan? Keith Ferrazzi Unplugged

Recently I had an opportunity to attend a seminar by Keith Ferazzi.  Keith is a New York Times best selling author and has written “Never Eat Alone” and “Who’s Got Your Back?”  He certainly has learned to manage his relationships better than the man in the photo above.

In his lecture, Keith asked a simple question, “Do you have a relationship action plan?”  Being involved in relationship marketing since 1991 I instinctively knew that this was important but Keith had the research data to back it up.

Here are some key findings in his research.  People with better social capital do the following:

  1. Find better jobs and find them more quickly.
  2. Get promoted sooner.
  3. Receive larger bonuses.
  4. Have the best performance reviews.

He went on to say that the #1 success factor for high performing global leaders is they have deep social bonds.

Keith also asked, “Are you the kind of person that walks around the world inviting people to have a relationship with you?”  What an interesting question to ask a group of relationship marketing professionals!  How many times have I avoided saying hello to someone?  How much easier is it to keep my interactions with people at a surface level?  Research shows that the top 1% income earners have the largest social capital.  In college there was a saying that put this fact another way.  It said, “It’s not the grades you make it’s the hands you shake.”

I can hear the excuses coming.  But John, I was born on the wrong side of the tracks.  I don’t run in those circles.  The people I hang out with aren’t like that.  I have a simple statement for you, “CHANGE!”

According to Keith you can start today with a “People Plan”

  1. Always ask “Who”  Write down 1 professional goal for your business and list 3 people that can help you attain that goal.  (He didn’t say 3 people that will sign up with you)
  2. Measure the intimacy strength of your individual relationships on a scale of -1 to +3.  Spend more time with the positive numbers.
  3. Expand your currency.  Do your homework on a person and find out how you can help them.
  4. Create your personal brand.  What do people think of when they think of you?

Your future will be predicted by 3 things:  The books and content that you read.  The material you watch and listen to and the 5 people you spend the most time around.

So what is your people plan?  Make today your day to be more intentional with your relationships.  Add value to the lives of people.  Start looking for ways to give.  Help somebody solve their problem.  Be a contributor not a consumer that is only focussed on your needs.

As you begin to develop this mindset watch your life change.  People will be drawn to you.  Many will choose to join you in your business because they know you have the ability to help them in their journey.

I Sponsored 123 Distributors Into My MLM Team In 1 Day Using This Facebook Tip

For starters, I know the internet is full of crazy stories of how some “guru” used the internet to make millions of dollars in 3 days.  This is not one of those stories!  However, it is true.  Facebook and other social media sites are incredible ways to broaden your reach all over the world.

So how did this unfold for me? PPC or Pay Per Click advertising. In May 2011, my company announced plans that we would be launching operations into India in the fall.  Hmm 1.2 BILLION people…sounds interesting.  What are the odds that I couldn’t find 2 or 3 that wanted more out of their life and were willing to work for it with my help?

At this point, I had an international team but it had grown virally out of my offline efforts here in the United States.  I knew other cross line leaders were building huge international teams but I didn’t know their secrets.  That was the beginning of my quest to figure it out.

I had some background experience in online marketing with real estate but to this point had not thought of leveraging that experience in this industry.  Other than posting updates about my business and new products on my Facebook wall, I had never taken specific action to use social media to expand my team in a BIG way.

So that was the start.  I know that many people have had the same thoughts but have become paralyzed because they don’t know what to do next.  They allow self doubt to creep in and they never take action.  In June I attended my company’s international convention.  In a breakout session, I heard one statement that changed my life.  It was this.  “Do you want your network marketing team to look like you or look like the world?”  Wow!  I had never thought of this before.  Of course I would like it to look like the world but how do I do it?  The speaker went on to say that you need to target in on people that do not look like you.  If you are white, sponsor people that are black.  If you are black, sponsor people that are white.  If you are American, sponsor people that are foreign.  You get the idea.

This thought linked back to my earlier thought about using Facebook and social media to expand into India.  I had to figure this out! A simple Facebook page and a $1 per day marketing budget that was laser targeted to my audience and I was off. One thing led to another and next thing you know I was starting to get phone calls from people in India!  They were actually contacting me wanting to know more about my opportunity.  LEADS!!  I wasn’t even using attraction marketing techniques and they were still calling and emailing me for more information.  Using simple Pay Per Click promotion I was able to sponsor 123 distributors in one day!

We now have a huge team in India and all over the pacific rim.  Once I discovered the MLM PPC secret, I was able to replicate it all over the world!

Empowerment Strategy for Your MLM Attitude

Earlier this week I talked to you about the power that belief has in your business.  Belief in your company, products and services, management team, up line and ultimately in yourself is one of the most important keys to success in this business.  So where do the sparks of belief in yourself come from?  How can you fan them into blazing flames of confidence?  The answer lies in having an empowerment strategy.

When I began work with my current company in 2007 I spent hours upon hours watching videos of the top leaders stories, listening to CD’s of people who had succeeded with the organization and attending live events to hear them speak and meet them in person.  I distinctly remember sitting at my computer and getting psyched up to make phone calls.  I would watch one video and then make 5 phone calls to prospects.  Watch another video and make 5 more.  Then I would listen to a song that fired me up and make 5 more.  This mental exercise created the belief in myself that I needed to pick up the phone.

Here is the crazy part…after I finished making calls I could easily slip back into a state of unbelief very quickly.  However, the activity that was created because of my “temporary belief” started to create results!  As my prospects began to say yes, my belief was elevated which led to more activity.

So here is the question, what is your empowerment strategy?  Top performers in every field have one.  Have you ever seen an olympic athlete right before they compete?  Many times they will have their eyes closed, visualizing themselves finishing a perfect routine or event.  Others may have iPod in hand, earphones in place listening to a play list that gets their mind to a sweet spot of belief.  Most elite athletes have that pre-game routine that they use to empower them to perform at their highest level.

Part of my routine also involves my faith.  As a Christian, I remind myself that God rejoices in my weaknesses.  He reminds me that His strength is made perfect in my weakness.  Talk about taking the pressure off of me.  Of all the empowerment strategies that I use, I believe the faith part is the biggest because it links my mind to a source much stronger than myself.

Have you thought of yours yet?  Remember a time that you won a something.  Maybe it was when you were a kid.  What music gets you moving?  Many times going back to the songs from your teenage years can unlock something powerful that you can tap into.  Find something that works for you!  Even if it only causes you to take one positive step, do it.  Then repeat.  One of my friends, when he was starting in business, used the theme song to Rocky.  He literally would play it over and over throughout the day to keep his mind empowered and his belief level up.

The Simple Script I Used To Earn 6 Figures In Network Marketing

One of the questions that I am most frequently asked is, “What do you say to people when you contact them about your opportunity?”  This is a great question and is a subject that has frustrated new distributors in the MLM industry for years.  Today I want to take some time to answer this question with my main script that has worked well for me.

To begin, let’s clarify what the goal of calling your prospect is.  The goal is to setup a time to get together with them.  The goal is not to get them on the phone and tell them everything you know about your opportunity!  It is very important that you are clear with this objective before you make the call.

I am a big believer in using scripts to build your MLM Network Marketing business.  Some people make the mistake and are not scripted because they believe that a script will make them sound fake.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  A good script is something you create with your personality.  The top producers in the industry all use nearly the same language every time they call a prospect.  Language that suits their personality but that is scripted. Great scripts prepare you for success on the call.  And that is what it is all about…preparation.

So here are a couple of scripts that I use when I contact a prospect for my network marketing opportunity.

If it is a person that I know but have not talked to in a long time…”Hi Joe it’s John!  Hey, I’ve got something real important that I need to talk to you about but first…How are you doing?”  I then spend time catching up with them.  I ask about their spouse, children, job ect.  They will usually ask the same questions back of me.  At this time I don’t talk about my business, I simply let them know what is happening in my life.  Then what always happens…they say, “Hey, you said you had something important to talk about, what’s going on?”  This is the point that most new distributors blow it.  They vomit on their prospect with every bit of information they know about their company.  After several minutes their friend says,”I’m not interested.” or “I don’t have time.”  What I say is, “Oh, I’m glad you reminded me.  Hey, I stumbled onto something.  It looks like we can help a lot of people and make some money in the process.  We need to get together and grab a cup of coffee.  You need to know what’s going on.”  That Is All!!  

At this point one of 2 things will happen.  They will either say “Great” at which time you compare calendars at set a time to connect or they will say “Cool, what is it?”  This is another opportunity to blow it so be careful.  Remember the goal is to just set a time to meet with them not to sign them up.  Simply say, “I’m going to tell you all about it but it is too complicated to get into over the phone.  What does on calendar look like the next couple of days?”

This script has literally paid me hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years as a network marketer.  I hope you can adapt this to your personality and with practice, use this script to take your MLM business to the next level.

Struggling To Find Time To Write Posts For Your MLM Blog?

Have you ever struggled to find time to write articles for your blog? I stumbled onto a free app on my iPhone called Dragon Dictation. Dragon Dictation allows me to speak into my phone and have my speech converted into text. I can then email the text dictation to myself and from my inbox paste the article into my blog or word processing software.

This tool has allowed me to be more effective and allowed me to get more content out in a timely manner.  It can be a great weapon in your arsenal as you are building your presence online.  Now, while I’m driving to meetings or away from a computer I can effectively record my thoughts for my blog or my business and convert them into text!

You’ll still need to edit your text once it’s imported into your word processing package or whatever blog you’re publishing but the time saved will more than make up for the editing that you’ll have to do.  Some of my best thoughts come to me while I’m in my car.  I am actually writing this post while driving from Tulsa to a meeting in Dallas.  Pretty cool!!

I also use this tool to dictate emails to my leaders or to create the text to send out group text messages my team. Anything that I can do to be more effective with my time and yet move my business forward is something I’m all about.

Dragon dictation may be a neat little tool for you to add for free and allow you to get one or two more posts out to your audience per month.  There are other free dictation tools available online as well.  Search around and find one that works for you.

The Forgotten Secret In Network Marketing

Are you frustrated that your team is not growing as quickly you would like?  Have you not been able to identify leaders that want success and are willing to work at it like you?  Too many people who desire to be multi-level, network marketing professionals stop short of developing large teams because they do not understand the concept of working depth in the business.

What is depth?  In the simplest terms, depth is a measurement in levels of people below you in your organization.  If you sponsor Joe and Joe sponsors Sue, Sue is 2 levels in depth from you.  So what is the big secret?  Everyone knows that!  The secret is that few understand how to navigate 15-20 levels deep into their team.  They do not understand that every time you are able to build to that depth in a team, a leader will emerge.  Leadership will always predict the sales volume generated by a team.  I would rather have 3 leaders that are committed long term to their business than 3,000 “distributors” who have joined my group that have not developed leadership skills.  These 3 leaders will out-perform the 3,000 every time.

If you are in a binary structured compensation plan, do not count depth by people that are placed below you by your up line.  Only count levels in teams that are personally started by someone that you sponsor.

So how does it work?  It starts with you sponsoring 3 new distributors yourself.  (Industry averages show that to accomplish this, you will need to properly contact 15 prospects about your opportunity.)  Out of these 3 new team members, 1 of them will be interested in generating income with your company right away.  Whenever I get a new person started, I always ask them this question.  “What is it that you would like to get out of this?”  For some it will just be the product or service your company provides.   Others will tell you that they are interested in both the products and the opportunity.  The one that tells me they are interested in the opportunity, I ask a second question.  “Would you mind if I gave you some input on how to start earning in the fastest way possible?”  I have never had anybody tell me no!

Now you have a person that has given you permission to help them.  I immediately begin to help them make a list of prospects. (not online prospects-that will take too long)  I begin with people that they already know.  My goal is to help them get 3 people started so I can find the 1 that is interested in building a business now.  I know that I will need to help them contact 15 people in order to accomplish this.  This post will not cover the “how to” of contacting, that can be found in other posts on my site.

I am always looking for that newest team member that gives me permission to help them.  That gets me to the next level of depth and allows momentum to start.  I always assume that the new person is going to quit.  Operating with this mindset gives me a sense of urgency to find that next level of depth.  Having this mindset will take you into the lives of new people on a weekly basis.  Sharpening your people skills will be a key to them giving you permission to help them.

By building depth under your personal, you make it harder for them to quit.  You have now given them something to loose.  You have also modeled for them the activities that they can use to build another leg themselves.  More growth!!

Imagine if you only move 1 level deeper per week!  Sometimes you can go multiple levels in one day but this is not the norm.  Focus on moving each of your teams at least one level deeper each week.  Consistent activity at the bottom of your team will cause leaders to emerge.  Working with these leaders long term will create the residual income that you desire.

The Killer Trap Online Network Marketers Will Not Admit

Have an endless stream of leads.  Sponsor 50 new personals per month.  Develop a business around the world in your pajamas.  Never do a home meeting or hotel meeting again.  Blah, blah, blah, blah….  It all sounds so easy!  Since the mid 90’s, online network marketers have been singing the praises of how easy your life will be and how you will be able to build your business on auto pilot without even talking people.  Nothing could be further from the truth!

Although, I have had people join my team without my knowledge via online marketing, none of them have done anything without having real human conversations with me first.  Think about it.  If you are really serious about this industry or any business for that matter, wouldn’t you want to speak with or meet with the person that you will be getting into business with?  Wouldn’t you want to know that this person will call you back if you have a question or need their input?  The internet is a great way to break the ice with prospective team members.  Reading your blog, visiting your Facebook page or watching a video of you on YouTube are all excellent tools to help you do this effectively with new people.  But, if your goal is to create walk away, residual income from your network marketing business, it is still going to boil down to good old fashioned personal relationships.

Listen carefully: I am not saying that you can’t sell something online without human interaction.  Obviously that happens every day.  Many online network marketers or multi-level marketers have multiple streams of income from affiliate marketing or from products that they promote in addition to their primary business.  But what we are talking about here is RESIDUAL income that does not require any continued work on your part.  This can only be accomplished by developing leaders on your team.  Leadership can only be developed by promoting a system that you have in place to help people grow.

Most people do not come into this industry with the leadership skills needed to grow and sustain a large organization.  Don’t miss this.  They may have the leadership skills to grow an organization but do they have the skills to sustain it?  When I came into this business I did not.  I thought I did but I was kidding myself.  When my wife and I first joined our company, we grew to an income of about $1,000 per week in our first 90 days.  This happened by building an organization of about 200 people.  We thought we were set!  These people were going to continue building and we would be retired on the beach in no time.  Guess what happened next…NOTHING!  I did not know what to do to sustain this growth and within the next 90 days my business had dropped to about $150 per week.  Was this the companies fault?  Was it time to look for another opportunity where I could be in on the “ground floor”?  Of course not!!  It was my fault.  I did not possess the leadership and relational skills necessary to continue at that level.  I learned a valuable truth of the industry.  Volume will always fall to the level of leadership on your team.  ALWAYS!!

If your goal of internet marketing is to develop a lead system that will not require hands on operation from you…save yourself the headache and don’t do it!  However, if your goal is to have a system with which you can add new people to a prospect list, then continue.   You should not look at these prospects any different than you would a prospect that you meet in person.  You will need to have the people skills necessary to make the person like you and then ultimately trust you.  This will require time on the phone and eventually meeting face to face.

I now have a large team in many countries around the world.  All of my leaders…real leaders, are people that I speak with on at least a weekly basis (usually daily) and are also people that I meet with and do meetings for several times per year.  This is where trust is born.  Face to face.  Letting them know that I am genuinely willing to help them reach their dreams by investing my time and money to help them grow their businesses.

Network marketing is the most amazing business in the world because it rewards people who are sincerely willing to help other people.

The Internet Is Killing Your MLM Network Marketing Team

Are you like the polar bear in this picture?  Clinging to ideas from the past about the most effective way to build your network marketing business?  The world has changed and will continue to change…what are you going to do?

As a leader or future leader in the network marketing industry, you need to understand the impact that the internet is having or will have on your business.  Multi-level marketing or MLM will always be a business whose long term success is based on close personal relationships.  How those relationships are initially formed, however, is quickly changing.  Adapting to this change and teaching your team to do the same will be one of the new fundamentals in this industry.

Not a month goes by that I don’t speak with someone in the industry that is frustrated with their current line of sponsorship because the sponsor does not realize what is happening online.  These people that I speak with are looking to me as the expert to help them realize their dreams.  Imagine if you have a large organization and you are not educating them with online strategies.  I promise that you have members of your team that have either visited my site or other sites like mine to start the education process to learn about these changes.

It wasn’t long ago that online dating sites were things that people did not admit to using.  Today, I have several friends who have met and married people they met through these services.  If people can form a relationship online that is strong enough to eventually lead to marriage, do you think you might be able to do the same with a few key relationships in business?  Of course you can!

OK I believe this is a trend and I know I need to be involved…now what?

  1. Find a mentor that you are comfortable working with and begin the learning process.  There are several strategies that can be used to begin marketing your business online.  Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, PPC, Article Marketing, Auto-Responders are just a few tools and techniques for you to use.  A mentor can help you find what will suit you and your skills the best.
  2. Pick one strategy.  Just one!  Master that strategy until you are consistently generating 5 leads per day.  Then add more.
  3. Go back to your warm market to let them know the information you now have about online marketing.  I have been able to sponsor people who were not interested previously but joined because of how I could help them online and the value that I could now bring to them.
  4. Continue to prospect offline.  Online marketing is not a quick fix to lead generation.  It will take you a little time to get it rolling but once it starts, it will become residual marketing.  Don’t wait…continue to prospect with traditional techniques.
  5. Never stop learning.  Not a week goes by that I am not able to glean a nugget of knowledge about online marketing from different websites, CD’s and videos.
  6. Find a system that you can use out of the box to begin marketing online.  You can create it all yourself but it will take months to get things going on your own if you are just starting out.  My Lead System Pro, MLSP for short, is a product that I have had great success with.  It also has a built in educational platform that will be priceless as your team grows.
  7. Don’t quit.  Too many people try online marketing for 2 weeks and give up because they are not seeing results overnight.  Stay at it and give it some time to produce.  I received a lead today from marketing that I did 7 months ago.  Thankfully I’m still in and am able to profit from my effort at that time!

If you are still reading this, you should better understand why the internet can kill your business.  It will kill it if you are not using it!  Leaders in this industry understand that the internet is an excellent tool to begin to develop more relationships.  Over time, you can build trust by adding value to your new friends.  Some of these friends will join you in your business if you continue to develop your people skills.  Others will not and that is OK.  They will be better off because of their encounter with you.

In most my primary company, helping 3 distributors reach a 6 figure income will produce a 7 figure income for you.  What are the odds that somewhere in the world there aren’t 3 people on their knees right now praying for an opportunity that would help change their situation?  What if they were to see some of your online marketing?  The thought of that still keeps me up at night with excitement!  Every morning I have messages from all corners of the world that are reaching out to me to learn more about my business.  How cool!!  You can do it too and I would be happy to help in your journey.
